With just 6 days until voters Bell, Harlan, Leslie, and Perry Counties hit the polls in a special election to fill the vacated Senate District 30 seat, the candidates are hitting the campaign trail hard.
Democrat Scott Alexander reported raising more money than State Representative Brandon Smith so far in the race, but both report having roughly the same amount of remaining cash for the race. I took a look a the finance reports today for both candidates. A large amount of Alexander’s money came from Perry County Democratic leaders, as well as leaders, teachers, and staff from a particular schools system in the district.
The Governor and Lt. Gov. Mongiardo will be back in Hazard tomorrow for ANOTHER fundraiser for Alexander. Both have been very open for their support of Alexander. With so much going on in Frankfort, I find it amusing that the Governor has so much time to come and campaign for Scott. In fact, Alexander’s nomination is surrounded by some controversy. I may talk more about that later in the week.
Today I was visited by someone from the Alexander campaign who was going door-to-door. The race has certainly heated up over the past couple days, and everyone is expecting a barrage of ads to continue on local TV and radio for the next week. Just as in the last match between these two candidates, the race has gone negative. Scott Alexander has resorted to attacking Brandon Smith on many items, from his voting record to his “fancy suits.” I actually saw an ad yesterday in which Alexander touted not wearing “fancy suits.” I don’t know about you folks, but I actually like when my elected officials look presentable, professional, and intelligent when they are working for me in Frankfort. I guess professionalism from an East Kentucky Legislator is not expected by some voters…
